The European Atherosclerosis Society is holding their next annual meeting in Lisbon on 5th to 8th May 2018. The EAS has offered to Ireland 3 free registration places for the meeting in Lisbon and a travel grant of €400. To avail of the grand IES members would have to become members of the EAS. World Sight Day 2017
Queen’s University Belfast is delighted to announce that World Sight Day 2017 is being held at Riddell Hall, Belfast on Thursday, 12th October 2017 and registration is now open.
World site day is an international day of awareness to focus attention on the global issue of avoidable blindness and visual impairment.
The day will concentrate on diabetic eye disease and will feature presentations from a host of international guest lecturers who are all experts in their field.
Many of you attended last year’s event and it was a pleasure to have you there, your feedback was positive and very valuable to us.
We would be delighted to welcome you again.

ABCD Spring Meeting 2017
Titanic Belfast, 10th & 11th May 2017
This year’s Spring meeting is being held at Titanic Belfast, an outstanding venue in this wonderful city and just a few minutes from Belfast City Airport, served by short flights from the majority of UK airports.
The meeting will commence at 6.30pm on Wed 10th May with our AGM, the presentation of the Rowan Hillson Insulin Safety Awards and a fascinating keynote speech by Patrick Bell, followed by the Association dinner, also in this magnificent venue. The following day promises a packed programme of talks from experts in their fields. Accreditation by the RCP London has been approved for this meeting (6 CME points). We will also be running our second IPN Meeting, following on from the hugely successful inaugural meeting in Manchester last year. This will run for a full day on Wed 10th May, also at Titanic Belfast. Further information is available HERE, and on line registration will open very soon.
Abstracts
You are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 250 words for the Spring Meeting. Abstracts should be for a poster on any subject which might be of interest to members of the Association – diabetes, endocrinology or general medicine.
- Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to display their work in the form of a poster at the meeting on 11th May and those meeting the criteria for publication will be published on the ABCD and BJD websites.
- The top 10 abstracts will be published in full in the BJD (subject to meeting the criteria for publication)

The AGM of the society will take place on the 15th October 8.00 -9.00am.
This year the inaugural Hadden lecture will be given Professor DM Nathan; the inaugural McKenna lecture will be given by Professor Amar Agha and the Lifetime achievement award will be presented to Professor AB Atkinson.
People presenting posters please take note of your poster number and all posters should be up for viewing before the start of the meeting at 1pm on Friday 14th October. All posters should remain in place until the end of the meeting. The Montgomery medal will be awarded for the best poster. The poster boards are Portrait in orientation. The full frame size is 2085 x 963mm and the size of the area within the frame is 2060x950mm.
People presenting orals please note your presentation is 10 minutes long with 5 minutes of time allowed for questions. The O’Donovan medal will be awarded to the best oral research presentation.
Summer Student Research Bursaries 2016
SUMMER STUDENT RESEARCH BURSARIES
The Irish Endocrine Society offers five (€2000) Summer Student Research Bursaries to encourage promising undergraduate students, medical students to pursue careers in endocrinology. The Society provides a stipend to each student award recipient to participate in research projects under the guidance of a Society member for 6 to 10 weeks during the summer. Recipients are invited to attend the Society’s Annual Meeting and may be asked to present research work.
Application Requirements
- Summary of research project, jointly prepared by Mentor and Student including Student’s role in the research project (2 page)
- Mentor statement which includes Mentor’s role in the research project including his/her plans for training
- Student’s CV (mailing address and contact details must be included)
