“It is with great sadness that the Irish Endocrine Society has learnt of the passing of one of its founding fathers, Professor James Devlin.
He was a pioneer in the speciality of Endocrinology in Ireland. He held the post of Consultant in Endocrinology at Beaumont Hospital (having been on staff of The Richmond Hospital prior to the creation of Beaumont Hospital) and at James Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown.
He held many academic posts with RCSI, one of Ireland’s long established medical schools.
He was never a man to stand still, and in the late 1980’s, he pioneered the use of insulin pumps, managing type 1 diabetes with both subcutaneous and implantable pumps.
He mentored and encouraged many of us to enter the speciality, including current renowned endocrinologists Prof Seamus Sreenan, and Dr Maeve Durkan who both trained with him.
Professor Devlin was a Renaissance man, a clinician, researcher, and teacher.
He loved golf and sailing off the Wexford coast.
He was a devoted family man and he took enormous pride in his children and grandchildren.
His passing marks the end of an era in Irish medicine.
